How 1 cold email got me 3 internships

Copy this simple email template to hear back from recruiters

Hi networkers,

Today we’ll revisit one of the most overlooked networking strategies - cold emailing.

It may seem like you’re taking a shot in the dark, but cold emailing actually gets higher response rates than LinkedIn!

Below, we’ll cover how I used cold emailing to get hired and provide you with a template to steal.

Here’s the route for today

How To Cold Email Correctly

The Context

I’ve done a total of 4 co-ops, but here’s the thing, I landed 3 of those 4 with just one cold email.

It wasn’t my resume or cover letter, it was a basic 146-word email.

I almost didn’t send the email. After all, I didn’t know the recruiter, I was a stranger to them. But I was also down on my luck.

As a 3rd year student, I only had 1 year left till graduation and was running low on time, so I took a leap of faith.

Then something strange happened. 3 days later, I got a reply and saw this:

Hi Michael!

I would love to chat about Scotiabank opportunities!

We’re going to be hosting a Scotia Hangout next week to help answer student questions, and share our recruitment process as well. I will send you the invite! Keep an eye on your emails

Cheers,

Jordan Daniels (She/Her) | Campus Recruiter – Wealth Management

I couldn’t believe my eyes, I had spent the past 3 months perfecting my resume and cover letter - with no success.

And in just 3 days, an email got a response.

Once I got into that coffee chat, the rest was history. I was invited to an interview shortly after and then I got hired.

I’ll save the coffee chat and interview for another article, let’s jump to the template.

Why You Should Care

Not to be dramatic, but that email changed the trajectory of my career. It led me to my 1st co-op and my 2 return offers for that same bank.

So here’s the exact email I used that you can copy, just make sure to edit in your own details.

Hello [Recruiter Name],

I hope this email finds you well, my name is Michael Ly and we connected on LinkedIn yesterday.

I noticed on your profile that you've worked in diverse fields from being a reporter and dance choreographer to now a Scotiabank Recruiter.

As someone who is currently looking to land a role in their field of interest, would you be able to share any insights on how I could effectively pursue my curiosities such as you did?

For a bit of background, I am a 3rd-year Finance and Economics student searching for a summer 2022 internship. I recently applied to the Advisory Team Support, Intern (140411) role and was wondering if you were open to discussing the details of the position?

I'd love to learn more about Scotiabank's culture as a whole. Thank you and have a great rest of your day!

Regards,

Michael Ly

1st Sentence: Do a quick intro and mention how you got their contact.

2nd Sentence: Highlight something you find interesting about them.

3rd Sentence: Ask a question about their interesting fact and relate it back to your own goals.

4th Sentence: Provide a brief background of who you are and any roles you applied to.

5th Sentence: Lastly, do a simple CTA. Bonus advice, suggest a time!

My advice to you:

Remember, just because emails work better than LinkedIn doesn’t guarantee you'll get a response.

The key here is to consistently email different recruiters.

See you next Tuesday 🤝

Interesting stuff I run across on the internet

🤖AI: Coming to a school near you. OpenAI announces a program to bring ChatGPT to campuses.

🥊Sports: Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson has been postponed. Maybe fighting someone twice your age isn’t the best idea?

💼Business: This San Francisco startup lets you mimic the trade of celebrities.
