3 Golden Rules of Networking
🔵 Networking won’t work unless you apply these 3 things
Over the weekend, I got invited to speak at a panel event called Newcomers Collision.
It aimed to equip students and young professionals with the right tools for the Canadian job market.
In my panel, I gave my opinion on what it means to be a good networker vs a bad one.
My advice comes from personal experiences. They're how I went from having virtually no work experience to landing 5+ job offers.
Here they are, broken down into 3 principles.
1. Don’t network with an agenda
The #1 mistake most people make when they start networking is that they focus on themselves.
Don’t get me wrong, the ultimate goal of networking is to gain something from your connections such as a job opportunity.
But that should not be your 1st goal.
Imagine a total stranger asking you for a job referral.
Would you feel obliged to help them? I wouldn’t. I’d probably ghost them if anything.
No one likes being used and recruiters are no exception. You can’t just message one, attach your resume, and expect a reply.
Your 1st goal when meeting someone is to provide value to them.
This brings us to point #2.
2. Be interested, not interesting
How do you provide value to someone?
The easiest way is to show interest in them.
People love to talk about themselves, and they like feeling important. That along is valuable.
In other words, when you cold-message that recruiter, focus on who they are and what they do.
In those first few coffee chats, just ask questions about the other person, and put the spotlight on them.
Doing this will stir a want in them to get to know you in return.
3. Patience and consistency are key
The real value of networking doesn’t come from the 1st coffee chat.
The value comes days, weeks, or even months later after you’ve built a strong relationship with that person.
This is why patience is key. You must be willing to build a bond with a person before you ask them for favors.
Then there’s consistency, because you can do every step right and still not hear back from someone.
Which is fine, people are busy, but you can’t give up.
I had to network for 6 solid months before landing my 1st internship.
Results don’t come overnight, but you will get them eventually if you do these 3 things.
Closing Thoughts:
I don’t come from an extraordinary background.
I went to a non-target school and I had an average GPA.
If these 3 networking principles worked for me, they’ll work for you too.
See you next Tuesday 🤝
