Read Time: 6 min

Hi networkers,

If I could go back and change something about my career path, it would be to start using LinkedIn earlier.

Now, I don’t need to tell you why LinkedIn is important, that’s simple.

What’s not so simple, is how to optimize your profile.

After countless trials and errors, I’ve gotten to a point where my profile gets me weekly calls from colleagues, recruiters, and students.

So today, I’ll be showing you 3 core areas of my LinkedIn and the tips you can use to instantly improve it.

Here’s the route for today

🎙️ Master Your LinkedIn Profile: Optimize your Header, About Section, and Work Experiences

TOPIC
Master Your LinkedIn Profile

1. Header Section

Custom Banner - Did you know there’s an easy place to create a custom banner? Head over to Canva’s LinkedIn Banner templates!

Important info I would include:

  1. your name

  2. current role

  3. and a contact email

Custom URL - No one likes a messy url, especially recruiters. If you haven’t already, you can edit your profile url to make it easily readable.

To do this, head over to your profile (desktop) and navigate to the right side where you’ll see Public profile and URL.

Click on the pencil icon, and then edit your url! I advise using only your name or a nickname, avoid numbers!

2. About Section

For your About Section, the less words, the better, you want to get straight to the point.

That’s why I keep mine under 200 words. (Aim for 1300 characters or less).

Here’s what I wrote:

Hello and welcome to my profile! I'm a Finance graduate working in Data and Technology. In my spare time, I write a newsletter that helps students/young professionals! Consider checking it out in the link below ⬇️

🔎 My Background

• Diverse experience in the banking industry. In my last role at Scotiabank, I was a Digital Transformation Analyst for Global Wealth Engineering. I've also previously worked in Private Banking and Global Wealth Management.

• Leadership role at AIESEC. My time as an Innovation Project Manager of International Relations allowed me to work with many great-minded individuals to connect today's youth with businesses.

• Extracurriculars - I like to apply my interests in challenging environments. I was involved in over four clubs at my university and have competed in multiple case competitions.

💡 Interests and Projects

• My favorite podcasts - Founder's Journal, Huberman Lab, FT News Briefing, Deep Dive

• Interests - weightlifting, reading, creative writing, retail investing, AI prompting

3. Experience Section

The best tip I ever got for this was from my Scotiabank recruiter. She told me to set it up using bullet points from my resume.

The reason is that recruiters will often check your LinkedIn page before an interview.

Under each role, I list the team I was under, and paste 2 - 3 bullet points. So something like this:

Product Strategy - Global Wealth Engineering

• Worked on wealth technology and product strategy. Applied agile frameworks to develop process flows on Visio and roadmaps on JIRA which helped product owners implement the early stages of digital banking software

• Assisted product owners in creating a trading platform by testing watchlist MVP features in an open lab environment resulting in the transfer of over 1.6 million records without a single line of code needed.

My advice to you:

Tweaking your profile? I would suggest experimenting with it based on my tips above!

And if you’d like to take inspiration, take a look at my entire profile.

See you next Tuesday 🤝
