You would not see me cold-applying. Instead, you would see me at networking events.
Jordan Daniels, a former recruiter, said this when I asked how she would find a job in today’s market.
And I agree. You need to do more than cold-applying.
Here are 3 networking strategies you need to start doing if you haven’t yet.
Communities over job boards
My first internship wasn’t from an online job board, it was from a school club.
A colleague from that club had gone to a networking event and gathered some recruiter’s emails.
She then sent them my way knowing I was searching for an internship.
Long story short, I landed a job because I emailed the recruiter whose contact I had received from my club friend!
Communities are amazing because building a support circle can exponentially increase your chances of finding something.
If you’re still in school, I encourage you to join as many clubs related to your desired career field.
The consultant club, finance club, leadership club, etc. Just join them!
And for those looking for another community, here’s one I found that’s worth the visit.
Finding a mentor is crazy powerful
Navigating recruitment is frustrating - no one tells you what to do or where to start, you figure this out on your own.
Unless you have a mentor, then it’s a game-changer.
In my 3rd year of college, I got accepted into a mentorship program and got paired up with the Vice President of Capital Markets at BMO!
Talk about a high-quality connection.
My mentor walked me through the finance hiring process, reviewed my resume, and did mock interviews.
He honestly saved me from wasting hours focusing on irrelevant stuff.

Instagram is a hidden gem
Yes, Instagram can actually be helpful.
Most of the networking events I find today are from a private group chat I’m in. We’re a tight-knit group of friends who send each other anything that crosses our radars.
I found my private group chat because a bunch of us kept seeing each other at the same networking events. We figured we might as well make a group.
When you attend networking events in the same city, and in the same industry, you see familiar faces.
To find your own IG group chat - do the first 2 strategies.
Find a community, find a mentor, and ask if there happens to be a group chat you can join.
Engage, learn, and build your social circle.
Eventually, one of your connections will result in you landing a job like it happened to me.
