4 Must-Haves of a Bullet Point

🔵 The STAR method isn’t enough, your resume needs to tell a story.

You’ve probably revised your resume countless times, and you’ve probably heard this advice countless times:

"Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result).”

While it’s a good start, it’s not enough to make a great resume bullet point.

What most people forget is the storytelling.

What do I mean by this? Let’s go through the 4 steps to creating a great bullet point, and then a specific example.

1. A Project or Product

Just like any story, there’s a main character.

The main character of your bullet point will be the project or product you were involved in.

What was it that you worked on? Be specific.

Once you’ve identified that, you can begin writing,

2. Powerful Action-Orientated Words

The bullet point should start off strong.

So avoid using words like:

  • contributed

  • assisted

  • participated

  • helped

These words do not give off the impression that you did meaningful work.

Recruiters are looking for ownership. For that, you use words like:

  • tackled

  • spearheaded

  • developed

  • created

3. A Clear Solution or Result

You identified what you worked on, now you need to explain its impact.

Most people make the mistake of forgetting this.

They mention the output, but not the outcome.

For example, you worked on this cool project or built this neat app.

Ok that’s great and all, but what did it actually achieve?

This leads us to our 4 and final point.

4. Quantify Where Possible

The holy grail of any bullet point.

Your work saved your company money? Ok, then by how much?

Your project increased your team’s efficiency? Ok then by how much?

The easiest way to present your solution is to add in numbers.

Closing Thoughts:

Now that we’ve gone through the 4 must-haves, let’s put it all together.

In the next section, I have a before and after example from my resume.

See you next Tuesday 🤝
