TOPIC
A 9-5 that doesn’t feel like one

For the past month, I’ve been reading this book:

It has changed my view of what “Escape the 9-5” really means.
Usually, when we hear that phrase, we think about quitting jobs to start a business.
But the author doesn’t mean that here.
While entrepreneurship is a part of the book, a good amount of it is also dedicated to helping corporate employees achieve remote work.
Even if their current job doesn’t offer it.
Why remote work?
Because it’s how Timothy defines “The New Rich” (NR).
The NR isn’t about having $$$; it’s about having the freedom to work WHERE and even WHEN you want.
This luxury isn’t reserved for business owners; employees can have it too.
In this article, I’ll recap how the book teaches you to achieve remote work in 3 steps.
It’s one of my favorite sections.
1. Get the company to invest in you
Before you request remote work, you should have the company invest in you.
What this means: Look for job-related certifications. For example, a project manager would get the PMP certification.
Then, ask your manager if the company can pay for your training.
Why do this? The more your company invests in you, the harder it will be for them to fire you. You want to build up your value as much as possible.
2. Use sick days to get shit done
Next, use your sick days to take anywhere between 3 to 5 days off.
Why do this? If the company doesn’t offer remote work, it’s because they don’t think you can produce the same quality of results from home.
This is where you’ll prove them wrong.
You won’t actually be sick. Instead, you’ll make these sick days your most productive days ever.
While you’re away “sick”, stay on top of your tasks, 2x your productivity - basically, just get shit done.
And be sure to DOCUMENT everything you accomplished during your sick leave.
We will need this for the final step.
3. Request a 1-2 day trial period
To get remote work, you have to convince your manager of 2 things:
They believe you’ll be more productive working from home vs in the office.
They think you’re being reasonable.
We’ll use step 2 to prove that you get more work done at home.
As for being reasonable, it’s all about how you phrase your request.
For example, let’s say I don’t work remotely but want to.
Here’s what a conversation might look like with my manager; we’ll call him Tom.
Hey Tom, got a minute to chat?
Hey Michael, sure.
Remember how I took last week off? Well, I didn’t feel like being in bed all day, so I decided to work on [list job initiatives].
I didn’t expect to get much done, but it turns out I was much more productive at home!
I documented everything I got done during that time; here, take a look!
Looks great and all, Michael, but where are you going with this?
To be honest, working from home made me realize how much more efficient I was.
And…I was hoping we could test this out. What do you say to a trial period?
I’ll work from home only on Monday this week, and if it goes well, I can continue to work remotely for 1 day moving forward.
Of course, I’ll document everything, and you can change your mind whenever you want.
So, what do you think?
Hmmm, alright, but it’s only a trial for now. And don’t go around the office telling this to everybody.
Sounds good, thanks!
Lastly, for my hybrid workers, you can also use this method!
Working 2 days remotely? Try bumping it up to 3 - you get the idea.
That’s all for this article!
Next week, we’ll discuss what to say if your manager rejects your remote work request.
See you next Tuesday 🤝
