TOPIC
A masterclass cold message

Cold messaging is the most useful part of networking.

  • All 4 of my internships? Landed them from cold emailing.

  • My full-time tech job? Got it from cold emailing.

It’s why I talk about it so often.

Now, I’m sure many of you already know how effective cold messaging can be.

The only problem is how to write them.

I’ve gotten many cold messages myself, and too be honest, most of them miss the mark.

But last month, 1 student sent me a message that made me want to instantly reply.

This was her message:

Let’s talk about the 3 things she did right.

1. A common point interest

She began with a common point of interest.

In her 1st two sentences, Sharon mentioned a shared experience: we both attended TRMC 2022.

This created a sense of familiarity and told me she took the time to personalize the message.

2. Putting the spotlight on me

She made it about me instead of herself.

In the 3rd sentence, Sharon noted my CAPM certification and connected it to her goal of pursuing the same path.

She kept me as the focus while naturally adding in her aspirations.

3. A simple, low-effort request

She kept her request simple.

Sharon wrapped up by explaining her situation, just enough to provide context. Then, she asked me for a coffee chat.

She didn't ask for a referral, resume review, or anything else unreasonable.

This made her message feel thoughtful, not transactional.

The big picture

Far too often, I see students sending cold DMs to people trying to get referrals.

If you want you actually get referrals, you need to be interested in other people first.

So, as a actionable step, in your next cold message, do these 3 things:

  1. Start with a common point of interest

Most people put up their guards when a stranger messages them.

Create a sense of familiarity to make them drop their guards.

  1. Make them feel important

Stop talking about yourself, instead, make it it about the reader, people love to talk about themselves after all.

  1. Have a reasonable ask

Remember, no asking for referrals in the 1st message!

You don’t know them well enough yet.

You should only be asking for a quick 15-30 minute chat, nothing more.

If you want your cold messages to actually get replies, study Sharon’s.

That’s all for today. If you enjoyed this post, share it with a friend!

If they subscribe, I’ll send you a coffee chat guide!

See you next Tuesday 🤝
