TOPIC
A remote job will change your life

🔵 Ah the age-old corporate debate…

Is work from home (WFH) better? Or is going into the office better?

I’ll tell you my answer, it’s WFH.

The benefits of having one are quite literally, life-changing.

Today, I’ll share a story from my workplace that highlights the difference between WFH life and the in-office life.

If you live within a 20-minute walk of your job, this doesn’t really apply to you.

This is for the 1 - 2 hour commuters.

WFH VS in office

On Feb 3, I got a company-wide email from our CEO:

Starting on March 6, employees will be required to work in the office 4 days a week instead of 3.

Minutes later, our head director sent a similar email but with one difference.

In her email, she said that my team - the product and technology team - didn’t need to follow the 4-day office rule.

Instead, we could WFH 4 days a week and come in once.

Now, you’re probably asking:

Wait a minute Michael, why does your team get special treatment?

Without going into too much detail, being in tech played a big factor.

Tech teams typically have a remote-friendly culture.

But the real reason I’m telling you this story?

Because once that email was out, the entire company was buzzing about it.

And after hearing about my co-workers’ commute struggles, I realized just how much the office can drain your time.

The office is a time life drainer

The problem isn’t the office itself, it’s the commute.

Our office is beautiful, we have a library, massage chairs, and a gaming room.

But even all that isn’t worth the commute stress.

Don’t believe me?

Here’s my co-worker’s daily routine looks like:

  • Wake up at 6:20 AM

  • Spend 1 hour getting ready

  • Leave the house by 7:20

  • Catch a 30-minute bus ride by 7:30

  • Get to the subway station by 8:00

  • Stand in a packed subway for 1 hour

  • Get to the office at 9:00

  • Work until 4 or 5 PM

  • Commute another 1 - 2 hours home

  • Finally get home by 7:00 PM

  • Repeat, Mon - Thurs

That’s 4+ extra hours every single day.

You could use that time to meal prep, work out, do a hobby, etc. Instead, you’re wasting it on commute.

This doesn’t have to be your life though.

Most people think the escape is entrepreneurship.

But you CAN have a 9-5 that doesn’t feel like one.

The beauty of remote work

Here’s what my WFH routine looks like:

  • Wake up at 8:30 AM

  • Spend 10 minutes making breakfast

  • Read a book (or doom-scroll TikTok) until 9:00

  • Deep-work until 12:00

  • Have lunch from 12:00 - 1:00

  • Walk to my nearby cafe

  • Return home by 1:30 or 2:00

  • Meetings (if any) until 2:00

  • Log off at 3:00 or 4:00

My favorite part? My midday walk.

Being able to step outside, enjoy the fresh air, and come back, while still on the clock, is true freedom.

Don’t get me wrong, I still like going into office once a week, but I like it because I have the freedom to choose.

I’m not being forced, that’s the difference.
