The cover letter formula
🔵 How to write a good cover letter.
A cover letter is a bit tricky. Unlike a resume, there isn’t a universally good format.
However, after writing over 107 of them, I’ve nailed down 1 formula that works for me.
The secret to writing an effective cover letter is to treat it like a story. A story that captivates the reader.
So the format is simple, it’s just 3 small paragraphs.
The hook
The meat
The closing
Let’s dive into it.
The hook
You want to treat the first 2-3 sentences of your cover letter like the main page headline of a news article.
The goal of these 2-3 sentences is to catch the reader’s attention.
Using me as an example, I wouldn’t start with something generic like:
Dear [Company]
My name is Michael and I study finance & economics at York University. I found this opportunity on LinkedIn and…(blah blah blah)
Boring, the recruiter already knows all this, I’m just repeating information.
Instead, I can do something like this:
Dear [Company]
Being a finance & economics student, I assumed I would end up in a typical role like accounting. However, through my co-ops, I was able to discover my passion for working on project based roles and playing a crucial part in driving business process improvements.
With this approach, I’m making a bold statement of my interest.
I’m making it clear WHY I want this particular role.
The meat
In your 2nd, paragraph, you want to back up your statement from the hook.
You already said you have a passion for X, Y, or Z, now you need to provide evidence to prove that.
To provide evidence, mention your accomplishments.
What internships have you done?
What case competitions or hackathons have you done?
What extracurriculars have you done?
What projects have you done?
Make a list of any achievements you’ve made, no matter how small, and pick 1 to talk about in your 2nd paragraph.
Then, repeat this process for a 3rd or 4th paragraph if you have room.
The closing
Not much to say here, your last paragraph is the easiest.
Here, you end with a simple thank you, and a call to action.
Closing Thoughts:
And that’s it! Keep it under 1 page, and 4-6 paragraphs. Download my template to see all this advice in action.
While networking is far more important, an amazing cover letter is the cherry on top to standing out.
See you next Tuesday 🤝
