Finishing school without a job lined up is a daunting thought every 4th-year student feels.
The job hunt can be pretty tough too. Most students end up sending out 100 to 200 resumes just to hear back from one place.
But what if I told you there was an easier way?
What if instead of sending out 100 or 200 resumes, you only needed to send 1 or 2?
Well, that’s what I did.
In today’s article, I’ll give you the complete breakdown of how I only needed to send 2 resumes to secure a full-time job before graduating.

My Full-Time Job Search Story
April 28th, 2023
Like some students, I chose to do my final semester in the summer because of a winter internship.
The good news, I made more money.
Bad news, I didn’t get a return offer, which meant I was going to be jobless in September unless I went back on the grind.
April 28th - May 9th
Now, unlike other students, I had no desire to spam hundreds of applications.
Sure, I could have gotten 1 or 2 interviews out of it, but from experience, I knew there was a better way, there was networking.
So instead of spamming resumes, I spammed cold emails.
Less than two weeks later, I heard back from KPMG and had a coffee chat with their recruiters.
Feeling good about the chat, this was when I sent my 1st resume.
May 10th - May 16th
After connecting with KPMG, I continued with my emails.
Which then led me to a company called OMERS & Oxford.
They were hosting an in-person networking event and I was able to get accepted.
So on May 16th, 2023, I got my suit ready, went into their office, and spent the next 2 hours talking with various teams.
This was when I sent my 2nd resume.
May 17th - May 31st
During this time, I was off-grid. happily enjoying my vacation in Australia.
Suddenly, on the day I flew back to Toronto, I got an email, the headline said:
OMERS Interview Request
Naturally, I accepted the interview and picked a time slot for June 5th.
June 5th - June 9th
After a 30-minute interview, I was told there was a 2nd round next week.
Still feeling good about my performance, I sent a follow-up email the next day and even attached some previous work.
Then, to my surprise, I got a call 4 days later.
Michael, great news. The team loved your work and would like to offer you the role.
Key Takeaway
At first, what I did looked very risky.
I mean, only 2 job applications in 2 months? Looks like a huge gamble doesn’t it?
Well, not really, not if you factor in the 30 or so cold emails I sent out.
The key realization here is that emails will help you get noticed way more than a resume can.
Why? Because back then (and today), the best way to get an opportunity is to form connections.
Emails let you do that, they give you a chance to create an impression.
Closing Thoughts:
This was my philosophy going into my job search:
I would only apply to a job if I had a coffee chat or an email exchange with the recruiter.
If you’re currently searching with little results, give this approach a try.
Send less resumes, and start sending more emails
