🔵 You’re using LinkedIn wrong…probably

This will sound controversial, but I’ll say it anyway.

LinkedIn is NOT a platform for job searching.

Now I know that sounds surprising given that I love the platform.

But I praise LinkedIn for different reasons, which we’ll get to later. The truth is, I’ve never gotten any of my jobs from there.

In today’s article, I’ll give 2 reasons why LinkedIn is not good for job searching, and tell you how you actually use it.

1. Ghost jobs

Have you ever applied for a job, not hear back, and then see that same posting weeks later?

Chances are, it wasn’t a real job, it was a ghost job.

Companies post jobs with no intention of hiring and the number of these fake jobs has skyrocketed this year.

A research by Resume Builder shows that as many as 4/10 job postings are fake.

LinkedIn is no exception, which brings us to point #2.

2. You are not the customer

“Shouldn’t LinkedIn be doing quality checks to prevent these ghost jobs?”

- you might ask

Well, no actually, since ghost jobs benefit LinkedIn.

People think LinkedIn works for the everyday job seeker.

In reality, LinkedIn’s real clients are the companies posting these jobs.

Why? Because more job postings = more visitors to their website = more ad revenue.

From LinkedIn’s point of view, trying to prevent ghost jobs would only deter companies from posting roles.

In other words, LinkedIn is not great for job searching because its job board is not optimized for you.

It doesn’t mean it’s impossible to find a real job through LinkedIn, it’s just difficult.

This is where we now jump towards LinkedIn’s true potential.

3. How to use LinkedIn correctly

Where LinkedIn lacks as a job source, it excels as a networking source.

The correct way (or at least, the way I use LinkedIn) is to grow my connections.

Instead of spending hours mindlessly applying to potentially fake jobs, I’m DM-ing people.

Recruiters, managers, interns, I’m using LinkedIn as a channel to find high-quality points of contact.

My recruiter, who hired me for my 1st ever internship, I found on LinkedIn!

So I praise LinkedIn as a connection builder because it’s those connections that eventually lead to jobs.

Closing Thoughts:

Now that you’ve heard my opinion on how to NOT job search, let’s talk about the correct way.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Copy This Strategy

Below are the exact 4 steps I used to land my 4 co-ops, and now, full-time role:

  1. Use LinkedIn to search for companies you would want to work for.

  2. Go on their page and under “People”, type in “talent acquisition” to filter for recruiters of that company.

  3. Use a tool like apollo to find their email contacts

  4. Send a cold email at 8 - 9 am. Here’s an example of one.
