Reflecting on 2023
Looking back on the best lessons learned last year
Read Time: 4.7 min
Hi networkers,
I hope you all had a great holiday break!
For New Year’s Eve, I took a road trip to Montreal with some friends where we caught the fireworks and toured the city.
How did everyone else celebrate the countdown? Let me know in the comments.
🏁 Here’s the route for this week’s run:

TOPIC
Lessons of 2023
It’s that time of the (new) year when we tend to do reflections. But before looking towards 2024, let’s look back at 2023.
Today’s read will be a summary of my five most-read articles of 2023 along with a lesson learned from each of them.
If you resonate with any of the lessons, click on the respective link to view the full article!
Article: How I Passed My Interviews
Lesson: The #1 soft skill you need to pass interviews is your likeability. How well you can get along with others will often matter more than your experience.
Article: How to Get Hired By Networking
Lesson: Don’t be interesting, be interested. If you ever want someone to help you in any way, the first step is to see how you can help them. By taking an interest in others, they will feel obligated to help you in return.
Article: Swallow The Work Frog
Lesson: Want to quickly advance your career? Seek out work instead of waiting for it to be assigned to you. Find something tedious your manager hates doing, and find a way to make the process easier.
Lesson: How well you understand a subject is based on your ability to explain it in simple terms. If you can’t explain it to a 6-year-old, you don’t understand it yourself.
Article: Getting into Tech with No Experience
Lesson: The 70/20/10 Rule explains that for whatever skill we learn, 70% of it will come from on-the-job work. Focus on building your skillsets by finding internships or doing simulation work.
TIP/TOOL OF THE WEEK
Gratitude Journaling
This week’s tip is gratitude journaling which was one of the best habits I picked up last year.
Think of it as a daily diary but for productivity. You write down 3 things: what happened, how you’re feeling, and your plans for tomorrow.
Gratitude journaling has helped me keep my life in order and provided me with a way to de-stress.
I use this free notion template to document my life. If you’re looking to pick up a habit for 2024, try it out for yourselves!
Actionable Steps
Go to the notion template and duplicate it to make your copy
Then, make at least one entry every week to build the habit
Until next time, happy new year! 🎆
